Sam's Weight

I was training with my personal trainer, Natalie, and I mentioned ice-cream.  Now, for her, that's like a red flag to a bull.  And I eat a LOT of ice-cream.  (It's soy ice-cream, btw.)
"Didn't you try those smoothie recipes that I sent you?"

"I eat smoothies for BREAKFAST."

"Smoothies are really healthy!"

I brought out my big guns.  "Do you know how many calories there are in ice-cream?  I need those calories!"

Natalie thought about it.  "You could have TWO smoothies."

"Natalie, in order to make up for the calories in ice-cream, I would need to be on a smoothie DRIP."

On a side note, I've hit 50kg, EXACTLY.  Happy happy!

Kosher for Passover

Some of the kids at work are Jewish, and some of them are kosher, in varying degrees.  Eloise is vegetarian at work, so that she doesn't mix milk and meat or have ham/pork/bacon accidentally.

So it was a bit of a shock to see Eloise chomping on a book.  More specifically, on the farm book.  To be even more specific, on the PIG picture of the farm book.

And it was the main day of passover.

Keeping kosher, that one is.

Sam Is Beautiful

Well, the compliments keep on coming my way.  What can I say?  I'm popular with the under 8 crowd (and a few over 8s...)

From Luke (who has proposed marriage).
"Sam, you're the beautifullest."
"Thanks Luke!"
"Sessie isn't the beautifullest."
"Well, usually only one person can be the beautifullest."
"You know why?  Because you have long hair."

From Bailey:
Randomly, while making play-dough:
"Sam, you're the thinnest," (in a VERY approving voice)

It helps working in an industry where everyone is addicted to chocolate.

I'll Look Out for You

Again in the three year old room (I had these kids as toddlers, and then last year they were in PK, one of the rooms where I get to hang out a lot, so a lot of these kids are MY SPECIAL KIDS).

Luke is fascinated with maps.  He can ID Australia, the Australian flag, and " 'Ganda where Sam's children live" (Uganda), and the Ugandan flag, and the UK flag.  Plus a few others.

But the concepts haven't all quite sunk in...

"Sam, do you live in Australia?"

"Yes Luke, I do."

"All weekend?"

"Yep, and all week!"

"I'll see you then!"

Photos

Excuse the watermarks!  I couldn't work out how to buy the downloads, so I did the dodgy thing and printscreened them all.  I did buy 2 hard copies though!

Yay for me running and not looking hideous!  Hope you all enjoy the photos!

River Run Geelong

On the 24th, I ran my first ever 10km!  One of my friends, Alex, ran the race with me, which was fun, (even if he beat me and made it look easy, which is clearly not okay and not fair).

I crossed the line at EXACTLY 1 hour, making my net time (finish time minus the time it took me to actually cross the starting line) 59:27, which is actually not bad!  (I finished 293 overall, 125 in my gender, and 34th in my category.)

On a side note, there was a guy who ran the WHOLE THING dressed in a complete BATMAN outfit!  Mask, cape, the lot

Alex and I ran together for the first 7km.  Alex had previously said that he "wasn't at all competative" and that he "was just there to support me".  Which was true until he realised that it was GREAT FUN to overtake people.  So after the 2nd km, he started doing that pretty much the entire time.  So I was trying to keep up, and he just kept on overtaking people.

At 7km, I told him I needed a walk break.  I said that he could either walk with me, or keep going.  He kept going, nad overtook a whole bunch of people up to 8km.  Then he decided it was even more fun to help me overtake people, so he RAN BACK and made me re-overtake all those people he'd overtaken and then ran back past.

But it was fun.

I'm doing a half marathon in May, in Sydney, to raise money for prem babies (I was born prem!)

I'll post some of the photos that the professional potographers took of us soon... once I'm organsised enough to actually get them!  I don't look too bad for someone running / has just finished 10km.  I'll post them soon!

Somehow, that Doesn't Surprise Me...

So, I was with the three year olds, when Rohan came up to me and told me excitedly, "My birthday's coming up!  It's in July!"

"That's great Rohan!" I said.  "My birthday's coming up too, in June.  That's just a little before yours!"

Alex looked thoughtful, then said very seriously, "My birthday's coming up, in Pluto."

I'm just surprised he's the only kid from another planet.

Race Day Photos

John-Wayne, Mum or Robert (I'm sure you can work out who is who), Dad, me, and Julie.

Robert and John-Wayne.  The buff one in the family, and the skinny one whose training plan involved a detailed diet.

Me and Julie.  I am older, even tough I don't look it.

Interesting notes from seeing these pictures:
- My glasses fall down A LOT.  I need new ones, and should just use these ones for work.
- I'm amazed at how tiny I am.  Not just skinny, though there is that, but short and just all round... tiny.  I always knew that I was small, but this is something else.  Especially when you consider that no one in my family is really large.

I'm running my next race on the 24th, and it's 10km.  Alex has volunteered to run this with me, so hopefully we'll get photos.  It's the River Run Geelong, in case anyone wants to either sign up or rock up and support us.

Holding On

I was at personal training, and was doing some push-ups.  Obviously, being a girl, my upper body strength is not the greatest, and I was doing them on my knees, same as usual.  Natalie (my trainer) decided that it wasn't hard enough, and I needed to do full ones.

Afterwards, she told me I was never allowed to do knee push-ups again.  (which I do, but I try to mix in some full ones too.)

"Next thing, chin-ups!  You won't know what hit you!"

"Oh," I said.  "I can do chin-ups.  I mean, not many.  But I can do 2 or 3."  (which really means 5 or 6.)

"Go on do them."

So I did 6.

Natalie looked at me.  "I can't believe you've been holding out on me with CHIN-UPS."

(And, in mad terror that I will have to do a million of them in future sessions, I am practicing some more, and have since done 10 in a row without falling off the bar!  Yay for Sam!)

Happy Chinese New Year

Yes, it's sideways.  Suck it up.  My internet skills suck.

But I got to wear this to WORK (which is where I am in the sideways photo), which is always nice, because I don't like having to wear black.

On an even brighter note... Wesley people will recognise this because it was my year 10 formal dress!  That's right, I brought and wore this dress when I was 16 (bought in China).  I still fit, though it IS tighter around the hips... which is probably a good thing, especially as I only weight 40kg in year 10.

It's True, We're Not

Robert was prepping to go to the park with Evan, aka "Fake Brother".  Robert decided that he wanted to take soft drinks... enough for him, Evan, and all of Evan's family.  Mum objected.

"But Mum, Evan's family is poor."

"We're not rich!" was her reply.

"Yeah we are.  We have way too many houses to be anything else."

"We're assest rich, but income poor.  Lots of farmers have that problem."

Robert paused and looked at her.  "Mum, we're NOT FARMERS."

Cancer Awareness Month

For those of you who don't know, February is Ovarian Cancer awareness month.

In light of this, I thought I'd post a humourous true conversation about this issue, from my recent race!

My whole family were waiting for the race to start.  My brothers started joking about how I was probably thinking about how to trip up all the other competitors (or at least those who were likely to beat me).

I said no, my secret plan was that as this was a fun run to raise money for cancer, I was going to ask for 5 minutes off my time for being a survivor.

"I'd ask for 10 minutes, but given it's for BREAST cancer, I don't think I can swing more than 5..."

John-Wayne laughed.  "Too bad you didn't have cancer."

At which point, everyone in my famil just looked at him.

"Um, I did."

"No way!"

"Ovarian," my mum confirmed.

"Even I know that," added Robert.

"And he wasn't even born at the time," added Julie.

So, ovarian cancer.  Be aware of it!

Seriously, ovarian cancer is called the silent killer, because the symptoms are typically vague and much like those of other diseases.  If you have any concerns, go to your doctor and ge it checked out!  Don't be a dead statistic - be a living one!

General Race Day Info

So, my whole family do the Pink Triathlon fun run, which was 5km.  I was expecting to do okay, to beat four out of the five members of my family, with me losing to my brother Robert, who is 18, male (what with being my brother), and a fitness fanatic.

But...

I BEAT HIM.  I BEAT THEM ALL!

That's right, I beat ALL of them.  I did really well, though I didn't reach my time goal.  That said, my time goal was probably unrealistic (and I knew it, so wasn't devestated).

So, some stats.

I came in 45th in total, with a time of 27:50, giving me a race pace of 5:34/km.  I came in at the 28th female, and 6th in my category (female and 25-29 years).  Which is really good, given it was my first ever race.

John-Wayne came in at 161, Julie at 162, Mum at 174 and Dad at 175.

Robert was 71st total, time of 30:10.

John-Wayne (aka Sugar-Boy), as predicted by all, ran the first km, then walked so slowly the rest that Julie (who walked the whole thing) caught up with him.  He then sprinted at the finish so he could beat her, because he had promised to cut off his legs if either Julie or Mum beat him.  "They'd obviously be useless to me," he explained.

So, that's right.  I WON!

Yes, I am slightly competative.  BUT I WON!

My next event in in Geelong, and is a 10km.

Photos to come when my mum works out how to email them from her phone (i.e. probably never).

Sunday 27 January 2013

Les Mis

A friend of mine went to see Les Mis on the recommendation of a parent.

"So, what did you think of it," I asked her.

"Well, I watched it, and I thought, why are they always singing?"

Which called for me to sing sections of Les Mis whenever I entered the room.

JW's Training Plans

So, you all know that my family are running the Pink Triathlon portion with me.  I'm expecting to beat all of them except Robert (my 18 year old brother, who is massively fit).

John-Wayne, my 21 year old brother, is DEFINITELY not going to beat me.  After all, he's in serious training.

"You know what I'm gonna do?  I'm gonna eat nothing but sugar for the whole week before the race, and then I'll SPRINT the whole thing, going argharhargh the WHOLE WAY."

As Robert said, "You do that John-Wayne, you do that."

Sam's Race

As most of you will realise, I'm attempting to run at the moment.  Attempting is probably the right word - I'm not very fast.  If I had to run away from a bear or something, I'd be dead.  On the bright side, apparently, the best thing to do with bears is to play dead.  I can do that.

Anyway, the plan is for all this to culminate n me doing the Tough Mudder.  And because while I'm crazy enough to attempt such a thing, I'm NOT crazy enough to do it without any form of training or other racing, I'm doing some shorter races first.

The first one that I'm doing is the running portion of the Melbourne Triathlon Pink - the 5km version.

It's on the 27th of January, and I'd love it if a few people could come and support me.  You can enter yourself (my whole family have signed up for the 5km version) or you can come and visit me at the finish at Albert Park!

Do text or email me to let me know that you're coming so that I don't miss you.

I'm expecting to run the event in a little less than 30 minutes, but am hoping for below 25 minutes.

I Don't Think It'll Be A Problem

So, I was playing with the (gluten free) play-dough with Gabby.  We were making biscuits.

"Here Sam.  You can have some, as a treat."

"Wow, thanks Gabby.  They look delicious!"

"Well, you can eat them.  Just don't tell your husband or your daughter about them."

Aarushi came up to me, and handed me one of the dolls.  "Here!  Here's your baby Sam!"

"Oh good," I said.  "I've been wanting a baby."

Aarushi looked at me very seriously, and said, "Now, don't throw your baby on the road Sam."

"Right..."

Sam Is Crazy

I got a bike for Christmas!  Well, sort of.  I got it after Christmas, from my family, for typing up book titles for Mum.

So I rode home from my mum's (5km), and crashed into a fire hydrant, taking off the edge of ne of the pedals.  Then I crashed into a fence.

So the next day I attempted to ride my bike to work.  It's only 8.5km.  I got 1km, then the pedal (not the one I crashed before) came off.  I pushed it home, then caught the bus.  My brother fixed the bike that evening.

The next day, I rode to work.  Let me just say, Burke road has a lot of hills between my house and Kew.  And that bike riding on a day when the temperature is 38 degrees is a bit of work.

You see, I haven't ridden a bike - a real bike - since I was 8 years old.  I still expect to be able to break by pedalling backwards.  And you have to balance (what's with THAT?), which you so don't have to do in a spin class.

In other news, on Sunday night I had an episode of "Sam is a terrible individual" thinking.  Convinced I am the worst person in the whole, entire world, along with being mean, horrible, not at all intelligent and more than averagely bad-looking.  Until about 3:30 in the morning.

Yeah, that sucked.  I'm still not convinced that this isn't the case, but at least now I'm not crying about it.

And no, I have no idea what happened.  There is no known reason for said episode.  I have not done anything mean or horrible, I have not become uglier, and I assume my intelligence level has remained more or less the same.

On the bright side, when I woke up, I ran my usual 4.25km run in my best time ever - 22.44mins.  So I guess even mild hysterics over my complete failure of myself as a decent human being has its upsides - faster running.

And now, as a result of personal training and a ABT class done right afterwards, my muscles are sore.  Two days later.  Whatever.  I'm still going boxing tonight.
